The X-51 uses an experimental jet engine called a scramjet. This is truly the stuff of science fiction. I’ll let Wikipedia do the explaining but basically the engine has very few moving parts and no turbofan (the spinning fan thing on the front of airliner jet engines). Theoretically, a scramjet should be able to reach speeds between Mach 12 and Mach 24 (9134 mph to 18,263 mph).
This is the cutting edge of flight technology that if perfected could put any point on the planet only 90 minutes away. Funny thing is, I was on a base last week shooting some video for airforce.com. I got into a discussion with an instructor that taught physics to Airmen training for a technical science career. It was a pure geek moment as we reveled in the beauty and power of physics. We even talked about scramjets – the theory, the difficulties with the technology, the implications of what scramjets would do for travel, national security, even space exploration. It was great to see someone with such passion about their job. It was also great to see that the It’s Not Science Fiction campaign was so spot on with what happens day in and day out in the Air Force. When it comes to breaking barriers, Air Force is the place to go. Pun most definitely intended.
